June 3 - 7
During my first week at the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) I learned about the different members of the organization. I went through all of IDFA's 200 members in order to understand how I could use social media later in my internship. I discovered the importance of knowing who your audience is and learned that IDFA wanted to use social media primarily for its audience of members as well as the general public. The general public consists of anyone who has Internet access, but IDFA saw that it had an audience composed of mostly adults who are interested in dairy-related issues, aging from 30 to 50 years old. While I learned about the importance of knowing who your target audience is in my public relations class, I learned how to apply to knowledge when beginning to think about the various social media platforms IDFA currently uses, Facebook and Twitter.
After my first day, one of the associates at IDFA created a Vine account. At the time, I knew that Vine existed, but I had not used it yet. After work, I downloaded the application to my phone and tried to use it. I quickly learned how to use the new social media platform and became knowledgable in its usage throughout the following days. By learning how to use Vine, I was able to learn to quickly adapt to something new, a characteristic that makes me marketable to companies. My ability to now use Vine is also another skill that I can add to my resumé.
My first task was to edit IDFA's Dairy Guide, a booklet containing facts about the dairy industry from the past year. The 2013 edition of the book was undergoing final stages of editing and I was able to find a few grammatical errors and share my comments on some of the design layouts in the book.
